Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) Explained

What Are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?

Sustainability is becoming a major strategy for forward-thinking organizations. As companies throughout Southeast Asia and beyond try to decrease their carbon footprint, many confront a similar challenge: how do you migrate to green energy when installing solar panels or switching energy suppliers isn’t immediately feasible?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are one option that’s revolutionizing how organizations approach sustainability. At Constant Energy, we’ve seen how RECs are helping businesses reach their environmental objectives alongside our Solar Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

RECs Explained

An REC is essentially a “proof of purchase” for clean energy. Each certificate represents one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable sources like solar, wind, or hydropower. When you buy a REC, you’re claiming the environmental benefits of that clean energy production.

The benefit of RECs lies in their flexibility. Your business might be operating in a rented facility where installing solar panels isn’t an option, or perhaps you’re in a region where direct access to renewable energy is limited. RECs bridge this gap, allowing you to match your electricity consumption with verified renewable generation happening elsewhere on the grid.

Why Businesses Are Turning to RECs

Practical Sustainability Without the Infrastructure Hurdles

For many of our clients, the journey toward sustainability needs to be both impactful and practical. RECs offer a way to make meaningful environmental progress without capital-intensive infrastructure changes. You can continue operations in your current facility while still reducing your carbon footprint on paper—and legitimately so.

Meeting ESG Requirements in a Competitive Landscape

If you’re feeling the pressure from investors, consumers, or authorities to enhance your environmental performance, you’re not alone. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles are increasingly affecting corporate partnerships and investment choices. RECs give a recognized, verifiable means to indicate your commitment to green energy, letting you tick those essential ESG boxes.

Supporting the Growth of Renewable Energy

When you obtain RECs, you’re balancing your own energy usage and offering financial assistance to renewable energy providers.  This offers additional revenue streams that stimulate future construction of solar farms, wind projects, and other clean energy infrastructure. It’s a market-based strategy that’s helping expedite the renewable shift throughout Southeast Asia.

Building a Greener Brand Identity

We’ve seen how businesses that take on board sustainability gain favor with consumers and partners who share these values. Using RECs allows you to authentically communicate your renewable energy commitments, potentially opening doors to new environmentally-conscious markets and partnerships.

The Booming REC Market in Southeast Asia

The global REC market is experiencing explosive growth, with projections suggesting it will reach $103 billion by 2030, growing at around 27% annually. It’s also exciting how Southeast Asia is emerging as a hotspot for REC activity.

Between 2019 and 2023, REC issuance in our region grew 13 times over, with countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia leading the charge. This growth reflects both the rapid expansion of renewable energy capacity in these countries and the increasing demand from businesses looking to green their operations.

Navigating Regional Differences

Each country is developing its own approach:

Malaysia has created an organized system through its Malaysia Green Attributes Tracking System (mGATS) and even offers a Green Electricity Tariff program where businesses can purchase RECs directly from the government.

Indonesia recently launched a national REC trading platform, bringing transparency and structure to certificate transactions.

The Philippines was an early adopter, implementing a compliance-based Renewable Energy Market that requires certain businesses to purchase RECs.

Singapore has positioned itself as a regional hub for REC trading, though its certificates tend to come at a premium due to limited local generation capacity.

Vietnam and Thailand are seeing growing interest in RECs, with developing regulatory frameworks that promise to bring more structure to these emerging markets.

The pricing differences across these markets are striking. For instance, RECs from Vietnam currently cost around $0.70 each, while Singapore’s can run up to $65 per certificate. These variations create opportunities for strategic purchasing decisions based on your business location and sustainability goals.

Making RECs Work for Your Business

While RECs offer a valuable pathway to sustainability, they’re most effective when implemented thoughtfully. Here are some strategies we recommend to our clients:

Focus on “Additionality” for Maximum Impact

Not all RECs are created equal. For the greatest environmental impact, look for certificates from newer renewable energy projects. These RECs help finance additional clean energy capacity rather than simply supporting existing infrastructure. This “additionality” factor ensures your purchase is driving genuine change in the energy landscape.

Create a Balanced Renewable Strategy

For many businesses, the most effective approach combines RECs with direct renewable energy solutions where possible. If your facilities allow for on-site solar installation, a solar PPA can provide immediate clean energy while RECs help offset any remaining grid electricity usage. This balanced approach often delivers the best environmental and financial outcomes.

Choose Trusted Partners

The REC market can be complex to navigate, especially with varying standards and rapidly evolving regulations across different countries. Working with experienced energy partners who understand both the technical and regulatory landscape helps ensure your REC strategy aligns with your sustainability goals and compliance requirements.

The Future of RECs in Southeast Asia

As Southeast Asian governments continue to develop their climate policies, we expect RECs to become increasingly integrated into regulatory frameworks. Businesses that familiarize themselves with these mechanisms now will be better positioned to adapt as voluntary markets potentially evolve into compliance-based systems.

The trend toward greater transparency and standardization is also likely to continue, making it easier for businesses to compare RECs across borders and ensure they’re making impactful purchases. Regional cooperation initiatives are already working to harmonize REC standards, which will ultimately strengthen the market.

While RECs offer a flexible starting point for your sustainability journey, many businesses eventually look to complement them with direct renewable energy solutions. This is where options like solar PPAs offer great benefits.

At Constant Energy, we specialize in developing solar PPAs tailored to the unique needs of businesses across Southeast Asia. These agreements allow you to directly consume renewable energy generated on-site or nearby, often at rates competitive with or lower than grid electricity.
